It always starts with interests and curiosity colliding at the intersection of something intriguing. As I follow it deeper, it becomes an itch that I can’t shake off. Then, all of a sudden, it is gone as quickly as it came. Space and time pass blissfully unaware of the thing. Then suddenly, without warning, it is back; this time, it has a hold over me.
I am no longer following; it is dragging me. Like the event horizon of a black hole, there is no turning back. All light and everything is now pulled towards the centre of this thing. I can see on the other side is a new world, a new vision—the journey's starting point.
Now, every doubt, fear and insecurity I have ever had comes to meet me. Who am I to do this? What if I fail? Every adverse scenario is presented before my eyes.
The options are to leap into the new world or retreat to the comfort zone of the existing world. I catch myself in this moment, reminding myself that “I too shall die.”
I pose this question: “If death is certain and the time of death uncertain, how should I live?” The answer to that question and my subsequent actions define the story of my life.
